Mayfield can’t capitalise on flying start

Mayfield vs Roffey

A tinge of green on the wicket perhaps the reason why Roffey won the toss and chose to bowl. Having done their research on the Roffey attack, Mayfield knew that nothing would come down quicker than 50mph and with their very strong batting lineup, were confident of setting a competitive total.

A couple of quick wickets early on saw the back of H.Lloyd and K.Silva; even the best can’t score runs every Saturday. H.Finch obviously enjoys the pace of Roffey’s attack, having played both games vs this oppo and started rebuilding the innings with B.Fitchet. Coincidently, B.Fitchet threatened to demolish buildings with some aggressive six hitting throughout his innings. At 63-3 H.Tagg came to the crease to support B.Fitchet, making 8. C.Saker and B.Fitchet put on 63 together, with C.Saker scoring 4 of them! Unfortunately B.Fitchet fell for 95 going for another bomb – great knock.

C.Saker was next to go, scoring 7, followed M.Cooke with a brisk 18, then by S.Harman. A dubious call from J.Allen resulted in a runout, sending him back to the pavilion. Luckily, J.Allen remained cool, calm and collected despite his dismissal, managing to restrain himself from hitting spectators and teammates. Number 11, W.Robertshaw plinked a couple of sixes before being lbw for 18, leaving Hooper unbeaten on 26 from 69 balls. Yawn. Anyway, 2 runs off full batting points was a pretty good effort on a wicket doing bits, Mayfield finishing on 223 with the Gingers making 51.

What a fantastic opening spell from M.Cooke and S.Harman in the second innings had Roffey 53-4, all their big guns back in the hut. All fielders backed up the opening pair well, especially the three grabs from H.Lloyd and one from fielding coach W.Robertshaw. D.Hooper kept it tight at one end, enabling J.Allen to pick up a couple of quick ones, Roffey on the brink of defeat at 97-6. Nerves from top of the table came to the fore with some ridiculous running, capitalised on by H.Finch with a pinpoint throw from cover. 100-7. Surely Mayfield’s second win of the season on the board?

S.Harman came back on to break the partnership of 80, then followed with another one to pick up his 4th and Mayfield's 9th wicket. Roffey scraped over the line 9 down with just a couple of overs to spare.

Lads, fantastic team effort alongside some individual performances that would normally get us over the line. Running top of the league that close and dominating the majority of the game shows what a good side we are. I overheard one of the Roffey supporters after the game finding it hard to believe we’re bottom of the league. We’re one win away from going on a worldie run. Can’t wait for Saturday. Jal.
