2s struggle as Buxted turn up the heat

The second X1 welcomed local rivals Buxted to Wellbrook. Buxted entitled this one as a local derby on their short video of the match, which is available on Youtube. I am not sure there were any highlights worth watching to be fair.

Mayfield won the toss on a day where the temperature reached 34C just shy of the record 35.6C set in June 1976. The winning of the toss was as good as it got for Mayfield.

Tagg was welcomed back into the side after missing chapel and leaving school early. He opened up with the in-form Toby Wallace fresh off the back of 50 in the previous match.

The pair started well and were given a helping hand by the opposition who bowled several wides as they put on 46 for the first wicket. This being the first time the 2s have managed double figures without the loss of a wicket for a few weeks.

Tagg was bowled by former Mayfield 2s failure Redding Barnes. Two balls later Barnes trapped Joyce. Cobb joined Wallace at the crease and the pair began to build a partnership until Wallace was caught behind for 32.

Chaplin entered the fray and again a mini partnership was built until Chaplin was caught off the ever dangerous full toss delivery, leaving the 2s 116-4. The score had barely moved on as Cobb (31) was bowled.

Two new bats now at the crease in the form of Killops and Nicklin. Killops found the boundary a couple of times before he became the returning Barnes third victim. The 2s now toiling at 139-6. His fourth wicket followed as Gilkes came and went next ball to steal match fee duty away from Joyce who looked a relieved man, as he was sure a two ball duck was enough for the job.

Nicklin was bowled in the following over with the score still at 139 leaving Mayfield eight wickets down with five overs remaining. It was soon 146-9 and then 146 all out as the 2s again failed to produce anything with the bat. Extras finished top scorer with 35 and they have featured in the top three scores for the 2s on a few occasions now.

Tea was taken and soon became the best part of the day just ahead of winning the toss.

Mayfield were hopeful as they went out into the field as the temperature had dropped by at least 1C. This hope became somewhat frayed as Wallace’s first over consisted of eight wides, thankfully not a 14 ball over though. Jimmy Parker (1-25) opened from the other end and bowled well as he managed nine on the spin.

Chaplin was bought on towards the end to keep the arm loose for next week, he claimed 1-14. Could maybe have had another one but dropped catches are something the 2s have well and truly mastered this season as again 3 went down in the innings.
Buxted cruised to a well-deserved 8-wicket victory.

This result had been in the offing as the 2s have come close in the last few games without batting well in any of them but we move on with several fresh faces next week. The second half of the season is where ours now begins as we look to secure our Division 4 status.
